Issue #25: My Hot Takes on the State of Bay Area Baseball
Some thoughts on my current baseball fandom, five Bay Area homes that are perfect for hosting a watch party, and a new TV show I'm enjoying.
The Silvert Lining is a place where I talk about real estate, cool homes for sale, things I’m looking forward to, and how I’ve been spending my time. In addition to this newsletter, I also post regularly on Instagram. You can follow me at Dan Silvert Homes. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your home search, you can schedule time here.
Mark your calendars! At the Saturday, August 9 Ballers game, I will be hosting a rally towel giveaway. That night is also “Ballers Take the Stage with Berkeley Rep” and it should be a good time all around.
Since I officially announced my sponsorship of the Oakland Ballers, I’ve had great conversations with people about the Ballers, the Pioneer League, and the general state of baseball in the Bay Area. As an East Bay native, I spent my first 40ish years of life rooting for the Oakland A’s. But then billionaire nepo baby John Fisher broke our hearts by moving the team to Sacramento to play in a minor league stadium with the eventual goal of relocating to Las Vegas. This week’s newsletter will not be a rant about the A’s!

Am I disheartened that for most of my life Oakland had three major league sports franchises and now they have zero? Yes, of course … but I’m also bullish on the community-centric Ballers (baseball), Roots (men’s soccer), and Soul (women’s soccer). The Roots now play at the Coliseum and sold out the stadium for their 2025 season opener.
I also attend a few Giants game each season. Do I love the Giants? Not really, but I like taking the ferry to the ballpark, rooting for a few favorite players, and watching Bob Melvin manage the team. Last night I was there for UC Davis night (my alma mater) and my ticket included a special long-sleeved shirt. I was impressed with the quality of the shirt and the fact that they had multiple sizes in stock.
Aging star Justin Verlander started the game for the Giants and pitched well, but the team’s offense was as cold as the temperature in McCovey Cove. Can the offense please score some runs to help Verlander win his first game with the Giants?! A significant number of fans in our section were watching the Warriors playoff game on their phones while the Giants played. Both teams lost, but at least I enjoyed the ballpark’s new loaded baked potato.
The Bay Area housing market is heating up as more homes are being listed for sale. Here are five of my favorite homes that would be perfect for hosting a watch party to cheer your favorite team on.

I am generally more of a movie person than a TV person. Recently after working on my real estate career during the day and then reffing lacrosse in the evening, I’m not up to watch an entire movie at 9 PM. A 30ish minute TV show and a bit of reading is the perfect way for me to wind down before bed. This is where the new Apple TV+ show The Studio comes in. The show has become a favorite that my girlfriend and I both look forward to watching.
The Studio stars Seth Rogen as a newly promoted Hollywood studio head who wanted to work in the film business because he loves movies, but now that he’s leading a studio he spends his day crushing filmmakers’ dreams. Rogen - who created the show with frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg - spends each episode self-sabotaging in an attempt to be successful at this job and make directors and actors like him. He’s actually terrible at both and that’s where the show shines! Each episode includes cameos by famous actors and filmmakers playing themselves in often ridiculous situations (see Martin Scorsese and the Kool-Aid IP).
My favorite episode so far is this season’s second episode titled “The Oner”. A oner is when a scene is filmed in one continuous shot. In the episode, actress/filmmaker Sarah Polley is filming the final scene of her new movie; the scene will be a oner that takes place at sunset. Rogen’s studio head visits the set wanting to be part of the action, but his presence on set creates cringy and funny delays and mayhem. The episode was filmed as a oner in a metafictional twist.
There are eight episodes of 10 out so far and the show was just renewed for a second season. Plenty of time to dive in and catch up!
