Issue #15: What's Good in the Bay Area
I've curated a list of must-see local events that will brighten your calendar and found five newly listed homes I'm excited to tour.
The Silvert Lining is a place where I talk about real estate, cool homes for sale, things I’m looking forward to, and how I’ve been spending my time. In addition to this newsletter, I also post regularly on Instagram. You can follow me at Dan Silvert Homes. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your home search, you can schedule time here.
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on February 2, thus predicting six more weeks of winter. While that groundhog does not have a particularly accurate track record, it did snow in Portland, Oregon last week. Groundhog shadows aside, spring will officially commence with the spring equinox on March 20, 2025. Longer days are ahead of us and I’m looking forward to spending my free time enjoying everything the Bay Area has to offer.
Let's explore what's happening in our part of the world, both on the streets and behind those "For Sale" signs.
Oakland Museum Women’s Board White Elephant Sale
The White Elephant Sale is a Bay Area institution (many of my Oxford shirts and sweaters were purchased there!) that has raised over $30 million for the Oakland Museum since 1959. The rummage sale’s preview days end on February 22, and then the massive clearance weekend will be held on March 1 and 2.

City Arts and Lecture
Attending City Arts and Lecture is one of my favorite Bay Area cultural institutions. If there is a live Q&A, I always ask a question (often the first question!) much to my girlfriend’s chagrin. The City Arts and Lecture calendar is packed with interesting people and events. I recently attended the Neko Case in conversation with Hanif Abdurraqib event. I have tickets to the March 19 Who Is Government?: The Untold Story of Public Service event featuring Michael Lewis, W. Kamau Bell, Dave Eggers, and Sarah Vowell, and am considering attending the conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Ron Chernow on May 21.
Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Berkeley Rep has a new production of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya playing until March 23 with Hugh Bonneville (the patriarch in Downton Abbey) in the titular role. Despite the play debuting in 1897, the themes and relationship dynamics feel timeless and even au courant.
Noise Pop Music Festival
The annual Noise Pop music festival will be held from February 20 to March 2 at various venues around San Francisco. Unfortunately, St. Vincent’s concert at Grace Cathedral on February 23 is sold out, but there are still a few tickets to see Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service) at Grace Cathedral on February 25. I saw Grammy award-winning St. Vincent at the Masonic last year and she is a incredible, frenetic performer.
San Francisco Symphony
David Bowie released his final studio album Blackstar on his 69th birthday, two days before his death on January 10, 2016. On June 26, the San Francisco Symphony will perform Blackstar Symphony: The Music of David Bowie. The event will feature the music of David Bowie performed by the band that played on the original Blackstar album and a 65-piece orchestra. One of my favorite podcasts, History Daily, recently had a great episode on David Bowie’s early life and rise to stardom as his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
de Young Museum
San Francisco’s de Young museum will debut a new exhibition, Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm, March 1 through July 6. The exhibition features 250 personal photographs Paul McCartney took between December 1963 and February 1964. In the photographs, McCartney captures his and his bandmates’ meteoric rise from local Liverpool musicians to international stars. I’m particularly interested in seeing the more personal, off stage images McCartney documented.
San Francisco Giants
The Bay Area’s only major league baseball team will start the 2025 season with exhibition games against the Detroit Tigers on March 24 and March 25. Their first home game of the official season is on April 4 against the Seattle Mariners. I do like Manager Bob Melvin and third baseman Matt Chapman (both former Oakland Athletics), and am considering buying tickets to the April 5 game as there is a Matt Chapman Gold Glove Bobblehead giveaway.
Oakland Ballers
The Oakland Ballers 2025 season in the Pioneer Baseball League commences on May 20 with a home game against the Ogden Raptors. I love that Ballers games feel like a Bay Area block party as I inevitably see multiple people I know from different eras of my life.
The inventory of newly listed homes is increasing every week. Here are five homes that have hit the market since February 13 that I’ve shared with my potential buyers.
